.IS domain fee increases for the first time

ISNIC’s Board of Directors approved the CEO’s proposal to increase the annual domain fee of an .is domain name by 2 Euro.

.IS is the ccTLD of Iceland.

After the increase, the annual fee for ‘.is’ domains will be 31.90 Euro without taxes, to registrants residing outside of Iceland.

This is what Jens Pétur Jensen, the ISNIC Managing Director, said:

At its meeting on February 25th 2021, ISNIC’s Board of Directors approved the CEO’s proposal to increase the annual domain fee by ISK 310 and EUR 2. After the increase, the annual fee for ‘.is’ domains will be ISK 6,293 incl. 24% VAT, and EUR 31.90 without taxes, to registrants residing outside of Iceland.

The annual fee for ‘.is’ domains has never increased before, but has decreased several times since the domain was first registered in about 1990. The annual fee was reduced in 2014 by ISK. 1,000 – from ISK 6,980 to ISK 5,980. In 2008, on the other hand, it did cost ISK 12.450 (EUR 83) to register a .is-domain name!

The increase in the annual fee is necessary to keep up with the constant increase in operating cost – especially labor costs – which has risen enormously in Iceland in recent six years, or just over 42% according to Statistics Iceland.*

* Wage index of employees in the general labor market: January 2015: 74.3. January 2021: 106.0.

  1. They should be working on making .is available through all registrars and making it an international extension like .me .co .io, I believe they would earn much more this way even (or especially?) with lower per-domain cost.
