Yes, I Am The Judge On “The Challenge” Domain Registration Contest Run By The XYZ Registry

xyz-logo-purpleThe XYZ registry asked me to be the judge on its new domain name registration contest and I accepted.

Why you might ask… Why not?

First of all this is not a simple domain name registration contest. It is a parallel .com AND .xyz domain contest. You can either submit to the contest a .com domain, a .xyz domain or both.

By the way, I am not getting paid to be the judge. I just think it is going to be interesting what sort of domain names are submitted after millions of .com and thousands of .xyz have been registered.

Think you can register the best .COM or .XYZ domain name and win $1,000? Then you can take The Challenge at TheChallenge.xyz while you hand-register the best domains you can find and submit your entries on the official contest site.

You have to submit your entry, along with a short survey, and you’ll enter your chance to win $1,000. There is going to be one .XYZ and one .COM domain winner for each entry period (there are 2 entry periods) so your chances of winning are the same, regardless of which domain extension you pick.

There is 1 more day for you to enter to win $1,000 at The Challenge. There’s still time for you to register the best .COM or best .XYZ domain (or both).

comWhen will the winners be announced?

On August 10th and September 7th, TheChallenge.xyz will announce one winner for the best .XYZ and one winner for the best .COM domain submitted during the applicable entry periods, for a total of 4 winners.

You can even enter more than one .XYZ and/or .COM domain. Just submit each one individually.

By Monday afternoon, I will pick the two winners who can claim their title as The Challenge winners and have $1,000 each to take home. First submissions close 08/06/2015, 11:59 PM (PDT).

  1. This is actually a genius move by XYZ.

You’ve been such a fierce critic of the company in the past, it would be hard to question your integrity in your judgement.

  2. The contest is rigged, Bullshitwebsites .com is the winner without an entry.

  3. Good luck…

Another comp… Filling out the form. Gotta Livin the US to blalala.

XYZ I though you were different!!! psh. psh

  4. Howie, we would love to do a contest internationally, but it would be nearly impossible to put one together that fit within each country’s laws, since they are all different.

However, we have done different things in various countries in the past and will continue to look for opportunities to engage with people internationally in the future.

    • Hi Shayan,

Yes, I understand it can be a complex issue. Shame though.

I would like to suggest for transparency, a badge suggesting ‘US Only’ with a ‘rationale link.

      Just a thought.

      Cheers, (An XYZ believer!)

  5. It’s good to see that Mr.K has changed his fierce attitude toward .xyz. Now, who is next ?

  6. According to Namestats.org about 70% of .xyz domains come from China. 70% of .xyz registrations is extremely small number in the country with 1.357 billion people. I guarantee you .xyz is not visible there.
USA is the second country with most .xyz registrations, about 7% which is 35K domains. Again in country with almost 320 millions people.
To sum, awareness of .xyz is none. Not to mention that they are loosing almost every day a lot of their .xyz registrations.

Shame on you Kons you are taking part in something like that.

  7. I have a list of 16 .com hand regs that I like a lot. Can I email you the list and you tell me the best one or just submit all of them on the website?

  8. K-you picked our name GreatBuddies.com to win the challenge and we read your blog all the time-so thank you! John

    • Fed Up With Squatters

John, your entry only helps prove Daniel Negari’s point about why the .COM namespace sucks: it’s too crowded (especially by spammers and squatters). Your .COM is merely for a squatter’s marketplace to sell and make money. You guys look at the Internet as a real estate landscape to make you money. Sigh. You’re what makes .COM namespace suck. You stay over there. The rest of us will set up our homes in the green pastures of somewhere a bit less crowded. I hope that $1,000 means you’ll stop squatting on a few less domains now.

    • I didn’t know it was you. There is another round that just started. Good luck!

      • K-yes it was me and thank you. As to the fellow’s comment above on Aug 11th i’m really not sure what to make of it.I know who this guy is and guess what-I do look at the internet names as real estate because that’s exactly what they are. His comment was really misplaced but that’s ok-I won the contest. Again-thank you.

  9. Congratulations, John. I see you have the name listed on BrandBucket for $2,275 and on Afternic for $9,999. Don’t BrandBucket require names listed on their site to be exclusive?

  10. Honestly, I don’t know quite where to begin, John. The congratulations were sincere and I’m unsure why you would think otherwise. As for everything else you ranted, sorry, wrote, I think the best policy is to let you think about how ridiculous your comments are. If you wish to advertise your domain name on multiple sites and at conflicting prices, that’s your business. Tortious interference? With alienating comments like that, you may need to seek out some friends at greatbuddies.com 🙂
