Dan.com merges with Afternic

Dan.com announced today that it is merging with Afternic after two years of planning.

The Dan.com/Afternic merger is a process that will start soon so Dan.com is closing new account sign ups.

A four-week period to let you choose your migration path will soon kick off. This will include an opt-out option.

The Migration Center

At the start of the migration period, they will launch a Migration Center for Dan.com domain sellers.

This platform will let you control the migration of your Dan.com account and listings to Afternic.

These will be your options:

  • Self-migration: looking for more control over your migration? The self-migration path lets you handle your migration to Afternic, allowing you to begin using the best of Afternic straight away.
  • Auto-migration: select this option, and we’ll automatically handle your migration after the migration period ends.
  • Opt-out: we’re confident that you’ll love Afternic, but you can opt out of migrating if you wish. However, after the migration period ends, your listings will be deleted, with no more sales occurring through Dan.com.

Seller Migration FAQs

The Migration from Dan.com to Afternic

When does the migration process start?

We’ll soon begin a four-week window to migrate your account and listings to Afternic. You’ll be able to self-migrate, let us handle it with auto-migration, or opt out entirely. If you choose auto-migration, we’ll start moving accounts as soon as the migration period ends.

Before that, though, we’ll email our sellers as soon as the migration period begins.

What will be migrated to Afternic?

Whether you choose self-migration or auto-migration, here’s what will make the move to Afternic:

  • Active domain listings
  • Buy it Now prices
  • Make Offer minimums

If I have an existing Afternic account, will my Dan.com account be merged with that?

Yes. When we begin the migration period, opt for self-migration, and you can seamlessly connect your Dan.com account to your Afternic account, merging them into one. Dan.com listings that already exist in your Afternic account won’t be moved over.

If you choose auto-migration and an Afternic account already exists that matches your Dan.com email address, we’ll merge those accounts. If not, we’ll create a new account for you.

What happens if some of my domains are already listed at Afternic?

Domains already listed at Afternic won’t be affected. If you’re transferring listings from Dan.com to Afternic, and another account has listed one of your domains, you’ll need to perform Ownership Verification at Afternic to add it to your account.

Will my Dan.com verification records apply at Afternic?

As an Afternic seller, you’ll need to use Afternic’s ownership verification settings to verify your domain names at Afternic. Those can be found through afternic.com/settings/ownership. Throughout the migration process, you’ll only need to verify a domain if you’re transferring listings from Dan.com to Afternic, and another account has listed one of your domains.

What happens to domains that were distributed to the Afternic network from Dan.com?

Domains you listed at Dan.com that were distributed to the Afternic distribution network are eligible for migration to Afternic, where they’ll receive the same exposure, or more if your listings are eligible for Fast Transfer.

Will I have to update my nameservers?

If you’ve been using ns1.dan.com and ns2.dan.com, then don’t worry – once you’re migrated to Afternic, we’ll automatically switch you to Afternic’s Custom Lander. The design will feel familiar to you.

Lease to Own Migration for Sellers

What happens if I have a Dan.com Lease to Own transaction in progress?

Got a Lease to Own deal in progress? Sellers, your active deals will be transitioned over to Afternic from November. We recommend heading to afternic.com/account/payments to set up your payout profile to ensure that payouts aren’t missed.

Please note that if you opt out of migrating to Afternic, your Lease to Own transactions will continue to be paid out by Dan.com.

How can I continue tracking the progress of my Lease to Own transaction?

For most sellers choosing self-migration or auto-migration, your Lease to Own transactions will transfer to Afternic from November, where you’ll continue tracking them. Until then, you can manage your Lease to Own agreements through your Dan.com account.

After migration, your Lease to Own transaction will be treated as new by Afternic. You’ll notice that your months completed resets to zero, while your Lease to Own term reduces to account for the payments made at Dan.com. For example, a transaction that completed 10 of 20 monthly installments at Dan.com will display as 0 of 10 at Afternic to indicate the number of monthly payments left. You will also download new Lease to Own invoices from Afternic.

The currency will be listed as USD, but you will be able to be paid out in your preferred currency through Afternic.

Will some Lease to Own transactions continue to be paid out through Dan.com?

In some cases where Afternic doesn’t support the domain extension, or the seller opts out of the migration, Dan.com will continue to pay out Lease to Own installments.

Where possible, we’re moving all Lease to Own deals over to Afternic to provide a better, unified experience for sellers.

Using Dan.com After the Migration Period Begins

Can I still sign up for an account at Dan.com?

As part of our upcoming merge with Afternic, we halted sign-ups to Dan.com on September 12th, 2024. We recommend heading to afternic.com to sign up to an Afternic account!

When will I be able to use Dan.com until?

Although new sign-ups have stopped, existing sellers can continue signing in to Dan.com after the migration period has ended.

What happens to active negotiations at Dan.com?

We recommend wrapping up those negotiations as soon as possible. If you’ve accepted an offer, we need to receive the buyer’s payment before October 15th, 2024. We’ll remind buyers of this. For a smooth process, we recommend concluding all active negotiations as soon as you can.

How do I complete active negotiations?

Complete negotiations by accepting or declining an open offer through your Dan.com sales dashboard.

Will I be able to download my data from Dan.com?

Yes. Once we launch the Migration Center, you’ll be able to download the following directly from the Migration Center:

  • Domain listings
  • Active Lease to Own transactions
  • Transactional Data
  • Invoices

Will my payouts be affected?

No. Payouts from Dan.com will not be affected during the migration process, but if you have an active Lease to Own deal, your payouts will originate from Afternic after we begin migrating your Lease to Own agreements from November. Some exceptions apply.

Can I still use Import Your Own Lead?

Unless you’ve already completed the self-migration process, Import Your Own Lead will be available until the migration period ends. It’s important to remember that we need to receive the buyer’s payment by October 15th for the transaction to close.

Afternic’s Custom Checkout Link is your go-to service for importing your own lead through Afternic.

Setting up at Afternic

Will I have to enter new payout information in my new Afternic account?

Yes, you’ll need to enter new payout information to ensure timely payments. Head to https://www.afternic.com/account/payments to set it up.

Will I have to move my nameservers away from ns1.dan.com and ns2.dan.com?

Dan.com nameservers will switch over to display Afternic’s Custom Lander. While ns1.dan.com and ns2.dan.com will still resolve to the Custom Lander, we suggest switching to ns1.afternic.com and ns2.afternic.com for smoother long-term management.

Any Dan.com listings using our Request Price lander will be automatically switched to Afternic’s Request Price lander.

If you want to adjust your lander once you’ve migrated to Afternic, we recommend switching to ns1.afternic.com and ns2.afternic.com and selecting your lander through the Afternic Portfolio page.

What happens to my Dan.com CashParking account?

After the migration of your domains from Dan.com to Afternic, you will still have access to your GoDaddy CashParking account and will continue to have access to reports on the historical performance of your domains through GoDaddy.

However, for your CashParking domains to continue earning revenue, you will need to resubmit your Domain Registrant information through Afternic. Check if you need to do this by heading to your Suggestions tab on the Afternic Dashboard.

The transition to Afternic’sCashParking service will take place as soon as you self-migrate, or we auto-migrate your listings. We recommend submitting your information through Afternic as soon as you migrate. If not, your domain names will stop earning revenue and we will not be able to process any payments to you.

Will Afternic support my domain extension?

Afternic supports hundreds of popular domain extensions, but if there are any extensions in your portfolio that can’t be migrated, we’ll let you know during the process. You can also check out the full list of supported extensions.
