Afilias announced that August 6, 2014, is the sunrise start date for its newest generic top-level domain (gTLD): .ORGANIC.
The .ORGANIC domain will be exclusively for organic goods and services providers that are certified or otherwise meet .ORGANIC eligibility requirements Specifically, addresses will be restricted to organic farmers, products, manufacturers, producers, co-packers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and official organic certifiers which have a current and valid certificate issued by an authorized Organic Standards body. Eligibility will also extend to other organic-oriented entities such as restaurants and trade organizations that may not be certified, but who can prove they meet stringent .ORGANIC criteria.
“With the popularity of the term “organic,” websites for many products and services now include this term, regardless of whether they have actually meet certain criteria. A .ORGANIC address enables Internet users to more quickly identify providers of authentic organic goods and services” said Roland LaPlante, Senior Vice President and CMO, Afilias. “In addition, bona fide providers now have a protected space in which to promote their organic offers. In short, .ORGANIC adds value to both producers and consumers.”

Global registry services provider Afilias today announced that August 6, 2014, is the sunrise start date for its newest generic top-level domain (gTLD): .ORGANIC.
The organic movement is growing rapidly worldwide as people seek a healthier lifestyle. Until now however, it has been difficult to find authentically “organic” products and services on the Internet, as .com and other addresses are not screened for authenticity. With the launch of .ORGANIC, the Internet will have a special “organic” address, making it easier for Internet users to find bona fide organic products and services.

Eligibility will also extend to other organic-oriented entities such as restaurants and trade organizations that may not be certified, but who can prove they meet stringent .ORGANIC criteria. Although the precise definition of “organic” may vary by location/jurisdiction, visitors to a .ORGANIC site can be sure that the site owners comply with .ORGANIC eligibility requirements.

I love when I see a registry that stays true to their core purpose. In this particular case, their choice to not only require registrations to be confirmed to be in the organic industry, but to intentionally exclude other interpretations of the word organic.
Not only will it make searches for organic products return better results, but it creates a culture where companies have an actual reason to get this nTLD. Each domain buyer will know that the value of their domain for people in their industry will remain strong, because search engines and the public will know 100% of the sites with this extension are within that industry.
BRAVO!
