Email Spammers Are Using Cheap .Top & .Pro Domains

I checked the last 50 spam emails I received to see what domain names the spammers are using.

I have to say that this is not a scientific study in any way and maybe these spammers that are targeting me are using different domains than what other spammers are using. Nevertheless the results were impressing.

The domain names I found were used for the email address and the majority were also used for the websites the links in the email were pointing to.

So here are the results from 50 domains I checked:

  1. .Top: 22 domains
  2. .Pro: 15 domains
  3. .Download: 6 domains
  4. .XYZ: 2 domains
  5. .me: 2 domains
  6. .Net: 1 domain
  7. .Biz: 1 domain
  8. .Ru: 1 domain

Here are a few examples of the domains used:

nowuinexpensive.download
3tofl.top
yourgear.top
thefox.top
839alex-perez.pro
nonsubmission-boughless.pro
ukdjqszsz.biz

The number one registrar used was Alpnames Limited which is selling domains for cheap. The current price for .Top is $0.40 and for .Pro is $0.99. Alpnames Limited has over a million New gTLD registrations today.

Other registrars included:
Namecheap.com
Xiamen Nawang Technology Co., Ltd
Namebright.com
Namepal.com
PublicDomainRegistry.com

I then checked a few domain name related spam and these are the domains used:

mmafighter.net
londonbuilders.net
characterapp.pw (.com link)
jisu135.pw (.com link)
kawwk.win (.com link)
freesignalsforex.com

So the spammers are using cheap domains and most are New gTLDs (.top, .download, .xyz) or domains that were just opened to the puclic without restrictions (.pro).

The registries are playing the numbers game (sell for free or at a loss, pray for as much renewals possible) but I think this will come back and bite them in the ass. .Top has over a million registrations as we speak. Sooner or later the entire New gTLD will get a bad email reputation and the so called adopters will abandon it for the next cheap TLD.

Registries should fight spam and not support it like these registries are doing. In their defense many registries are doing a good job.

  1. You always tell it like it is, thanks for your research.

  2. Such spam mails will increase the awareness of a new extension. Only negatively.

  3. Spam has definitely been the drawback of cheap pricing.

  4. I agree with you. I only get spam from .TOP sites. I’ve set up rules to automatically block any mail that links to a .TOP site.
