Half a million dollars spent on 40 .APP domain names

.App domain names officially launched yesterday as the new extension, run by Google, entered the EAP phase.

EAP is the early access period when anyone can register available .app domains for an extra fee. The extra fee starts high on day 1 and it is reduced until day 7.

.App enters General Availability on May 8. From that day anyone can register available .app domains at normal prices.

In the first few hours of EAP on May 1st there were 40 registrations that had a cost of about $12,500 each. GoDaddy was selling these for $12,523.99 each. So there was about half a million dollars spent on .app domains in the first few hours of the EAP. There could be more EAP day 1 registrations but these will be revealed tomorrow.

Here are 27 (out of 40) of the Day 1 .app registrations each costing about $12,500 and the companies that bought them:

Some of the EAP Day 1 domains were behind whois privacy or registered to individuals or whois data was blocked by Google or the respective registrar such as premiere.app, aspen.app, honey.app, store.app, vpn.app, diet.app, well.app and d.app. There is also some chance that 3-4 of these domains are in an auction at GoDaddy as there may have been more than 1 applicants.

As you can see above the Google registry has not reserved 1 and 2 character domain names and from what I have seen premium prices are not that expensive.

On May 1 ended the “Sunrise” period where trademark holders could register .app domains. Sunrise lasted for from March 29 until May 1 and more than 3,000 domains were registered by trademark holders. Sunrise domains were sold starting at about $20. Companies that bought .app domain names during sunrise include Apple, Microsoft, Warner Music Inc, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc, Starbucks Corporation, Salesforce.com, Inc, Real Madrid Club de Futbol, PayPal Inc, Morgan Stanley, Marriott International Inc, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company, Ford Motor Company, CBS Broadcasting Inc, 7-Eleven, Inc, etc.

All domains (sunrise, EAP, general availability) will renew at about $24 except for the premium priced domains. Registry premium domains have a greater registration fee, with pricing ranging from USD $49 to $1599. This is a one-time registration fee, with the domains renewing at standard first-year pricing thereafter.

Google is requiring HTTPS for all .app websites so GoDaddy includes an SSL certificate will all .app domain purchases.

Google paid $25 million to get the .app new domain name extension back in 2015. (New gTLD) It took Google more than 3 years to launch .app domains. Google continues to work on plans for .dev, which will be launched at a future time.

  1. They wasted their money.

  2. Not sure this is a good name with .app – marketintelligence. There’re hundreds of available extensions with this name. Why they come with .app?

  3. Interesting information.
Thanks for you time to put this together for us.

  4. Money follows attention folks!
Here’s another example of Google leveraging their popularity/domination and CASHING in with .APP!
Let’s do the math quick: NOWEDA eG bought 7 names x $12,500= $87,000USD
NOWEDA eG flushed down 87K, but heck it’s tax deductible baby! They should have bought 100 more LOL

I ask five figures for a top notch .com they go “OMG! IT’S TO MUCH MONEY!!!”
Really? I agree with them, it’s to much money but that wouldn’t stop them from buying would it.
I mean they bought cr.app already from Google 🙂

Hope my feedback was useful and entertaining!
