The usual dilemma! What is the best birthday gift? A domain name or a Sonos system?

So here is the usual dilemma that everybody has. (or may be not!)

What should you buy your girlfriend or boyfriend as a birthday gift? Should you buy them a domain name or a Sonos system?

So I got an inquiry for a last name .com domain and send back a quote. The guy was from France living in the UK.

The reply I got was not what I was expecting:

“Hello.
Sorry this is just my girlfriend’s surname and I wanted to surprise her by gifting *******.com for her birthday but the price is pretty high….for a birthday gift…. I guess I will have to buy her a Sonos system instead. Sorry to have bothered you.
Many Thanks”

Not sure what she would have liked more… (What do you think Morgan?)

It doesn’t sound so romantic, especially coming from a French guy.

I am a domain name investor and I haven’t actually thought about giving a domain name as a gift to my wife. I own my wife’s first name in our ccTLD for quite a few years now but I don’t think she has any intention of using it. And I am sure she wouldn’t like it as a birthday gift!

But then again I wouldn’t say no to a domain name myself…

  1. If you are going to give a domain as a gift, give a website to go along with it. It will show you spent time and thought, not just money, and will have more meaning (if done well).

  2. If he can’t afford it I see no future in their relationship. 😛

  3. I’m sure a domain would go over well..LOL.
Then you can count on a nice argument and be looking for a new relationship.

    • After reading Joseph’s comment i was thinking, if a domain was on his OWN wish list for HIS Birthday or Christmas, that’s a different story but for a person that does’t get all this it’s not a good idea.

  4. Between birthdays and christmas wish lists, a smarter kid than I was in the mid 90s could have cornered the domain market. Doubt Santa saw too many domain requests at the North Pole, though.

  5. Sounds like BS. Then again if he thinks a Sonos system is a good present for a female then maybe he is silly enough to think the domain is a good idea as well?

  6. Most women and men appreciate totally different kinds of presents.
Men often like practical presents while women presents which create romantic atmosphere or have affect on senses
I cannot imagine women being happy after receiving a power tool but I can imagine men satisfied with that.
