.Shop gets to 51,755 domains just hours after General Availability (5,000 from EAP)

.Shop domains opened for General Availability today. Here is a look at results in the first hours of GA and the .shop launch phases.

In the first 30 minutes 39,801 .shop domain names were registered and by the two-hour mark GA registrations grew to 45,427. There are now a total of 51,755 .shop domain names after more than 1,000 names were registered by trademark holders during Sunrise and around 5,000 during the Early Access Period. Many of those first in the door at .shop chose to pick up premium names and a total of 616 premium names have been registered to date.

Some people are complaining that renewal prices for some .shop domains are much higher than the registration prices and they were mislead. Not sure how this plays out.

“This is a historical day for .shop and we are thrilled with the results but it is just the very beginning” says GMO Registry CEO, Hiro Tsukahara. “Going forward we aim to contribute to the success of both online and offline businesses and to support and encourage innovation and development in ecommerce.”

.Shop was first opened exclusively to trademark holders on June 30 for a 60-day Sunrise phase. During Sunrise applications were received from 1,182 trademark holders in more than 30 countries around the world.

GMO Registry, Inc. had announced that new top level domain .shop had already grossed over $2 million dollars in revenue with close to 2,000 registrations mid-way through the advance registration .shop Early Access Program.

GMO Registry, the .shop registry, is a domain registry services operator based in Tokyo, Japan. Established in 2009 with a vision to secure meaningful and trusted namespace for ecommerce, the company acquired .shop in a $41.5 million ICANN auction in January 2016.
