.Porn and .Adult new domain names launched today.
Here is a look at the sunrise and domain matching program. Only holders of registered trademarks in the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) were eligible to participate in the Sunrise phase. The domain matching program was a priority registration period for 2011 .XXX Sunrise applicants AND for .XXX domain name holders.
3,749 .Porn and 3,665 .Adult domains were registered during the sunrise period.
3,132 .Porn and 2.667 .Adult domains were registered during the domain matching program.
The total .porn and .adult domain name registrations before the general availability today were 6,881 and 6,332 respectively. ICM Registry, the .xxx, .porn and .adult registry, claims there were about 7,500 .porn registrations so far. (look at the bottom of this post) At a $62 wholesale domain name price that is about $465,000 in revenue for .porn.
Many celebrities and companies registered a .Porn and .Adult domain.
123 registrants bought a .porn domain and didn’t buy a .adult domain name during sunrise. for example:
emirates.porn
gormiti.porn
jet.porn
wrestlemania.porn
xerox.porn (do people still “xerox” their ass?)
hamleys.porn
lamborghini.porn
manoloblahnik.porn
miele.porn
There were also 47 trademark holders that bought a .adult domain and didn’t buy the same domain in .porn, for example:
dexter.adult
pfizer.adult
survivor.adult
williamhill.adult
cnet.adult
dunkindonuts.adult (this would be interesting)
excel.adult
johnsons.adult
national.adult
baskinrobbins.adult
ncis.adult
I can maybe understand not buying a .adult domain but buying the .adult domain and not buying the same in .porn seems a bit strange. The percentages of not registered domains are very low. They are just 3.3% for .adult and 1.3% in .porn. Maybe someone at a brand protection agency made a (costly?) mistake and forgot to register the other.
Of course there are thousands of trademark holders that didn’t register any of the .porn and .adult and I totally respect this strategy. It is just strange to me to get into all this trouble and not register your .porn domain name after getting your .adult domain.
I have not cross checked all .porn and .adult domains in the .xxx gTLD to see any other patterns.
You can search for all sunrise .porn and .adult domain name registrations at the Sold.Domains sunrise database.
(All numbers are according to zone files. An estimated 2-3% might be registered but without nameservers, thus not appearing in the zone files and not counted in the number of this article. This number is almost 8% for .porn according to ICM registry. Maybe the registry includes some blocked domains as well.)
all in all i think its a waste of money. i guess those big corps attempting to buy up every possible gtld it makes sense but even that i think is a poor exhausting strategy.
this has been a dilemma for me because as i’m sure many of your readers know…. i have a HUGE p***s. i’m trying to keep a low profile so women don’t mob me but if someone else registers it that would be problematic as well. truly a quandry.
The great .PORN names are going fast!!!
The following .PORN domains were available at 11:58 Eastern today:
our.porn
play.porn
asia.porn
usa.porn
drone.porn
At 12:05 Eastern or sooner they were GONE!
following are available
– virtual.adult
– virtual.porn
I stayed away from both because i feel .xXx is king for the adult industry. .sex, .porn and .adult extensions are defensive regs by ICM. .xXx is the international brand everyone knows.
I registered diy.porn today
