International Sugar Organization (ISO) modifies it’s protected IGO acronym to “ISOSUGAR”

The International Sugar Organization sent a letter to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on the 29th of May saying that because if the International Organization for Standardization complaint to ICANN about the preventative protection for the acronyms of Intergovernmental Organisations (IGO), it allows it’s acronym to be modified in the list of protected IGO acronyms provided by the GAC.

They said given that the International Sugar Organization currently uses “isosugar.org” as its official domain name, they suggest modifying their acronym on the list of protected IGO acronyms provided by the GAC for domain name purposes, to that of “ISOSUGAR”.

International Sugar Organization said that this letter does not prejudice any rights that the InternationalSugar Organization otherwise has in the “ISO” acronym but I am sure that is not exactly the case. They rolled over and the International Organization for Standardization will take advantage of this in the future.

Here is the letter:

Dear Sirs,
We are aware that the International Organization for Standardization has recently raised some concern that preventative protection for the acronyms of Intergovernmental Organisations (IGO), in the context of ICANN’s expansion of Generic Top Level Domains (gTLDS), would subject the registration of “iso.string” to the consent of the International Sugar Organization.

In this regard, given that the International Sugar Organization currently uses “isosugar.org” as its official domain name, we suggest modifying our acronym on the list of protected IGO acronyms provided by the GAC for domain name purposes, to that of “ISOSUGAR”.

We trust that the present letter will alleviate the concerns of the International Organization for Standardization and allow you to support IGO efforts to obtain protection of their names and acronyms in the DNS.

Please note that this letter does not prejudice any rights that the International Sugar Organizationotherwise has in the “ISO” acronym.
