Major League Baseball (MLB) paid $1.2 million to buy the domain name Rockies.com from the Canadian The Rockies Tourism Authority that now uses the domain name canadianrockies.org.
This sale was brokered by Venture Capital Group, which announced that the sale was the largest for a sports domain name transaction. Venture Capital Group announced last fall that the Rockies.com domain name, which had belonged to the The Rockies Tourism Authority, would be put up for auction.
The domain name Rockies.com is currently redirecting to the official MLB website at colorado.rockies.mlb.com. MLB had bought the domain Angels.com for $200,000 in 2010.
This sale gives MLB the rights to all but four of the .com domain names for its teams. It does not own the rights for the team domain names of the Giants.com (belongs to NFL’s New York Giants), Rangers.com (belongs to Future Media Architects that is known for not selling any domains ever), Rays.com (belongs to a Seattle seafood restaurant), and Twins.com (belongs to Durland & Darvin Miller).
