I watched Die Hard and Die Hard 2 back to back the other day.
These are 2 of my favorite Christmas movies even thought they are actually action movies and the only connection to Christmas are a couple of Christmas trees here and there and a Christmas song at the end of each movie. Well actually, both Die Hard and Die Hard 2 are supposed to be taking place on Christmas Eve but that offers little to the plot. Somehow even though both movies came out to theaters in July both are taking place in December.
There are other Christmas movies I like: Bad Santa, Elf, Home Alone, Scrooged, Gremlins, Batman Returns, The Life Of Bryan. Not your typical Christmas movies…
“It’s a Wonderful Life”, anyone?
I hadn’t watched the 2 Die Hard movies for maybe 4-5 years and I was mostly amazed by Die Hard 2 and what was perceived as cutting edge technology in 1990. And what the normal airport security measures were. Or actually I was surprised by the complete luck of security measures in the airports.
Bruce Willis’s character thought that sending a fax was so advanced and so 90s. One of the best lines in both movies is the one Willis says to a female airport clerk coming on to him while he was sending a fax. She asks him what is he doing later and if he wanted to go for a drink. He replied by showing his wedding ring and saying: “Just The Fax Ma’am, Just The Fax”.
In the meantime Bruce Willis was carrying a gun everywhere in the airport even though he was a cop on vacations, the old lady in the airplane was carrying a taser for her protection and anyone could get to the air traffic control room. And of course everybody was smoking. EVERYWHERE!
All this gives you a perspective on what has happened in the past 25 years and what could happen in the next 25. Back in 1988 and 1990 the internet was practically non existent. What will happen in the next 25 years? I have no idea but I am waiting a lot of surprises that will probably won’t come from ICANN.
Yesterday my brother told me of someone he knew that was 25 years old and didn’t have an internet connection at home and he only had some old hotmail.com email account he didn’t even use. Apparently he didn’t know how to add an attachment to an email and everybody at his university were looking at him like he was an alien.
I guess he is close to being illiterate today. Will we all be illiterate in 25 years? What percentage will be able to keep up with the changes?

As a matter of fact I watched The Day after Tomorrow just last week for the first time. It was good for a disaster movie.

Maybe so but my tennis game is better than ever.
May I say, the only people that I know that are absolutely updated at 89 or more years old are women. One is a housewife, she is the great grandmother of my only grandson, sadly not genetically related to me. Shirley drives her car to her club, goes to the market and helps with charities by herself. She sends mails, uses Skype & Facebook, she migrated to a tablet for a year now, and so on.
Another one, is retired as Endocrinologist doctor. She was 85, a few years ago, and at the same time the most recognized updated specialist in adolescent. I went to ask for help with my son at that time. She did an accurate and perfect diagnosis and prognosis. I know a couple more.
Perhaps, the common thing in all of them, is that they are multifaceted. I mean they developed a lot of different skills, like gardening, housewifes, languages, charities. Another common fact is that all belong to middle class, no poor nor spoiled people.
Some men focus on work only and when they retire they switch off.
It’s always good to have different interests in life.
Movies is one of mine.
Yes, sadly many men do not understand that it is in their best interest to do other things as young as possible. By retirement time, may be too late, due the neurons lost their flexibility.
Every Xmas I always watch ” Home Alone ” I and II …really cool
Die Hard 1 is always on my Christmas movie list. Great Choice.
