Yesterday 15th of July the .Wien new domain name extension entered general availability. Vienna (Wien in German) is the capital and largest city of Austria.
The first day, or rather first hours, registration numbers were good for the .wien New gTLD. It has a total of 4,657 domain registrations today. These numbers include the Sunrise (trademark) domain registrations. .Wien increased it’s registrations by about 4,000 domains on it’s first day.
Of course .wien can’t compare to .berlin that had almost 32,000 domain name registrations after it’s first day. But Berlin has twice the population that Vienna has, .berlin was offering some free domain to residents and Berlin is the same in English and in German. (Wien is Vienna in English)
About 98% of all the .wien domain names were registered in European registrars. Only 101domain.com has more than 1% market share in .Wien. Go Daddy is not selling .wien domain names at this time.
(I am always comparing the same first hours for all New gTLDs. The hours between General Availability and the first zone files update.)
A lot of good names were either reserved or snapped up. Any idea on the number of registry reservations? I had a bit of a poke around and it was difficult to assess given that whois wasn’t working very well.
No sorry. Most registries don’t share how many domains they reserve.
i hope and belive that dot wien will grow up slowly and solid
