I got an email from 101domain.com saying that the .berlin registry ended early the .BERLIN promotion that was to run until Friday June 20th, 2014. According to the dotBERLIN registry, demand was exceedingly above their anticipated volumes, so they have decided to pull the plug early.
I guess the .berlin registry didn’t count on a couple of domain companies buying thousands of .Berlin domain names. I little more time and they wouldn’t have left any .berlin domains for the registry to sell. Meaningful that is…
These 2 companies, DomCollect AG (owned by Sedo) and DomainProfi GmbH, ruined it for everybody.
101Domain started offering free .berlin domains just today and the offer is already done.
Here is the email from 101Domain:
101domain has been notified that the .BERLIN promotion that was to run until Friday June 20th, 2014, has been extraordinarily cancelled early. As of 1pm PST today, June 18th, the free .BERLIN promotion will unfortunately come to an end.
According to the dotBERLIN registry, demand was exceedingly above their anticipated volumes, so they have decided to pull the plug early.
We would like to congratulate everyone that was able to get their free .BERLIN registrations in during this amazing opportunity and would like to express our utmost regret to those that were unable to register before this early cancellation.

I wonder what they thought would happen with free domain names. I think it is a stupid idea to give away free domains unless it is limited to one per customer or some conditions, why just let 1 or 2 entities grab all the domains in your extension, what was the point?
They didn’t think this at all. Lol
To be honest, the feeding frenzy by DomCollect and the domain freebiethon are most likely unrelated. Still, I’d take a free .Berlin domain that I’d initiate, over a forced XYZ at NetSol.
I thought there was a limit of 100 per customer?
There was in a single registrar. But the registry didn’t have a limit so other registrars didn’t follow that 100 per customer rule.
it seems their brains were out to lunch in not putting a restriction on how many per customer.
Who cares they are all going to be dropped in a year, just a waste of time
This will certainly mess up .berlin’s renewal rate in a year’s time. What were they thinking?
Couldn’t this easily been prevented if they had put a cap on the number of domains that each company or individual could have registered free of charge?
i´m still happy i was able to get 3 albeit not totally free but for 99 cents.
hyphenated ones but the Germans love their hyphens 🙂
I got the same emails from 101domain, notifying me the promo had ended before it begun. So DomCollect/Sedo had been informed about this offer way before the rest of us? It seems not only were they in a position to take full advantage, they did..
dotBERLIN should delete every single DomCollect/Sedo and DomainProfi registration.
Why?
101domain was a bit late into the free .berlin domains and started on the 18th.
Here is the original announcement on the 16th:
