This is post number 1000 on my blog – Who I am and why I do what I do

Yes this is my 1000th post on my blog. I was thinking of writing something about what I have written “blah blah blah” but I will not.

Instead I want to summarize some of the comments I have made in the past couple of days on who I am, what I support and what I don’t and why I do what I do. Especially regarding New gTLDs and my purchases and my portfolio as a whole.

First of all, I don’t have to explain what I register, sell or drop to anyone. I don’t pretend to be unbiased. Everyone is biased some way or another. I will tell you what domains I own so everybody can have an idea which way I am biased to.

Someone asked me if I am a .com guy or not. I will tell you what I am.

I am a .com (is king), .org, .info, .biz, .us, .gr, (some, not all) new gtlds guy.
I own about 10000 domains of which 33 are new gTLDs.
Nothing more, nothing less.

My purchases have nothing to do with my posts and all to do with my posts. e.g. I don’t write about sunrise because I have marks to protect. But zone files, registrations and sales help me understand what the market is doing.

The main problem with gTLDs is that everyone thinks they should take sides as a whole. Pro or against. Well, I am both pro and against. Pro .online, against .buzz.

Not all new gtlds are created equal. I don’t own any .plumbing and I don’t intent to. Nor will I buy a .xyz. There are going to winners and a lot more losers.

I bought color.diamonds and e.estate because I liked them. I don’t have much to lose.
I don’t give a rat’s ass if .diamonds fail or if .estate goes to hell.
I don’t even care if all new gTLDs fail. I will go back to my com and org and info.
But it doesn’t hurt to diversify by 1% or even 10%. I still buy .com and .org and .info. And I have sold 2 .org for 5 figures this year and more last year. Does this mean .org is better than .com? No.

The initial .com discussion was completely off at that time. People were saying that .com is dead or that it will die slowly. Rick was trying to defend .com but the truth is that .com doesn’t need someone to defend it. It’s numbers speak for it.
.com is not going to die and will not lose value. Not in the next 10-15 years anyway. It takes a lot of work to kill something that big.

That is all crap marketing.
100 will hear that and 1 will believe it.
That 1 is enough for now.
Because the market is growing and more money is to be made even from that 1.

The new gTLDs are here and more will follow in 5 years.

And there is going to be confusion. People make money during the confusion.
But not the confused ones…

I bring facts and numbers in this blog and I try to find some order.
I am writing this blog because it helps me find that order.
I hope I can help a couple of people along the line.
People help me with their comments. I read comments in all the industry blogs.
You can learn a lot just by reading comments.

Enough with this rant. Back to work.

  1. I have found your analysis of the new TLD rollout, registrations, etc to be informative. Thus far I am cautious about the new TLDs but I respect there are experienced, deep-pocketed domainers who are placing calculated bets on certain keyword / tld combinations. I already have enough risk with .TV so I don’t need to venture into any other less liquid TLDs. It should be emphasized that newbies should avoid the new TLDs as the likelihood of substantial losses is probable.

  2. Congrats on the milestone.

I enjoy reading your blog and have found your posts on nTLD numbers very interesting.

I won’t be buying many nTLDs either (I’ve got 2 currently). However, it’s a big change for the industry and it would be crazy not to at least follow the action and get a picture of how things might playout.

  3. looking forward to your next 1,000

  4. Congrats on reaching that milestone! Great job!

What matter for me is honesty.
I see more honesty in this blog than in any other, so congratulation to you and I hope you will keep always your focus on integrity, sincerity, freedom of speech and no censorship as you have already demonstrated.

P.S. Although it seems to me you do not need money, if a Paypal’s “Donate” button could help you in the future to remain on the boulevard of Freedom and Honesty, add it…
