Yesterday, GMO Registry partnered with Alibaba Group to hold the first ever auction of .shop domain names. That was the first opportunity to bid for .shop premium names.
Around 20 names were put up for auction, under the theme of “shopping”. The auction targeted the Chinese market and featured numbers that are considered lucky in addition to Chinese words. All 20 names were sold for a total of RMB 391,131 (US$58,583).
.Shop domains launch tomorrow Thursday September 1 at 15:00 UTC with the Early Access Program (EAP). Registration prices for day 1 of the EAP start at about $30,000. The .shop General Availability starts on September 26.
