Moniker Adds New Security Features But It Is Too Little, Too Late

monikerMoniker announced some new security features to help customers protect their domains from theft that was common practice there over the past couple of months. I say: “Too Little, Too Late”. Problems started with the control panel/system change and the registrar was killed off by the countless stolen domains.

Moniker added a much sought after two-step authentication and improved password requirements. I changed my password a few weeks back when the whole Moniker theft scandal was revealed. I even offered some advice on how to check if any of your domains were stolen.

But I don’t see anywhere how to activate this two-step authentication offered. It is not under the “Security” section where it should be and it is not in the “User Profile” either. Any help with that Moniker or is it once again a feature planned for when a few more domains are stolen?

As an extra layer of security, they have also applied an updated geolocation authentication mechanism that verifies the IP address used to access the account. Not sure how this works but it seems that it could be easily manipulated.

  1. Re: geolocation. Most likely simply comparing login IPs against a Maxmind geo database. It will probably cause problems for folks that use VPNs but there should be a way for Moniker to whitelist in cases like that.

  2. Rightly said. They are too late to implement new security layers. I have moved out all my domains from Moniker.

  3. WORST WORST WORST part of moniker was I had some of my better sales in 2014 there, and it took forever to get transfers out, and get paid. Now I am almost Moniker free, and won’t have more than a 1 day wait, or at least a rep who can express the transfer process, because MONIKER reps are ignorant, and you ask a question, and will answer back with something totally unrelated, cut and pasted.

    You had it coming moniker.

    Were the passwords reset again? I am having trouble logging into the mother account. I had only one account before the transfer. With the password reset a few weeks back, I discovered there was a main, or mirror account to my one account.
