Only buy what (domains) you need

I got inspired to write this post by a tweet made by Peter Sunde, founder of Njalla (and Pirate Bay), a privacy domain name registration service, about black Friday purchases:

So I will not be posting any domain name deals today. Some of the deals today are not really deals anyway…

I will not be buying any new domain names today. When I think of a new domain name I register it immediately. If I think of any names to buy or if a client happens to ask me to register a domain name today I will do it as usual. I will not be going after domains today based on a $3 discount. And I will not be buying any worthless domains just because the happen to be free today. No, today is not the day to buy your next .horse, .pw, .moe or .blackfriday domain name!

I will also will not be transferring any domains to registrars I don’t already use just to save a few bucks. There is a reason I use the registrars I use. I use them based on several factors including pricing. I will not be moving 3 or 10 domains out of my registrars just to save a few dollars. I think that my time for transferring out, learning a new system and then transferring back is worth more than a few bucks. (plus the risk of using an unknown registrar)

Of course if you have a list of free domains to buy then today is a good day to do it.

Having said that I will only be buying a few contact lenses today (because I am out) and maybe a few SSL certificates (because I have a few websites without one) if can find a few cheap.

So today and everyday please only buy what (domains) you need.

  1. I saw one domain place offering 50 cents privacy, black friday is in full effect!

  2. Konstantinos,

You can use let’s encrypt, the let’s encrypt foundation is the only reason why google held up to start penalizing
sites. You can apply on all your domains. and in bulk and at once – depending how you host your domains…I’d be happy to share the script with you or anyone else, it needs to be a cpanel-based hosting or straight linux stack, and under one IP- without penalties, depending on the number of domains you could and should add a few more IPs but the SSLs can be generated at once ).

  3. ps: and it’s FREE for real, I’ve been using for a while now on all my domains.

  4. Black Friday for me doesn’t exist, I always purchase something only if/when I need it … BF is just hyper consumerism BS …

    @Kostas: Let’s Encrypt is free, have a look. 🙂

  5. well said.

My time is more worth then the extra dollar spend
and I too use the registrars I use having good reason

    one of them is usability
g d dy is worst in industry in that aspect

but its a great time to leave the crappy registars
where some aquired names are stuck

    cheers
    Frank

    • Frank, I believe GoDaddy hosting accounts are cpanel-based,if so, all you need is to ask for shell root prompt and run a script ( let m know if u need it )and you are done, it even auto-renewal automatically. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have hard-coded blocked. if this is the case, once your contract is up, take your domaining to the next level by moving to the cloud – AWS or Google cloud, it is not more expensive anymore, NO more blacked IPs because the hosting company have way more customers than their resources plus their [amazon and google] respective registrars are not bad, lots of apis to handle domains ( without having to acquaint half dozen VPs….), I havent paid for SSL in a long time. 🙂

  6. ps: Apparently there is now a plugin that is free into whm, which is the cpanel admin screen, in order to know just type this in your browser http://AnyGivenSldTldUnderYourHosting.tld:2086 ( or 2087 ) if you see a prompt then use the plugin, if not, ask for shell root and the script would suffice. If you move to the cloud, ditch cpanel tough ( or you would end paying 20/m to cpanel, big no no ).
