Sunrise registration results for .tips, .diamonds, etc. (Sedo, Tiffany & Co, Cartier, Dropbox, Club Med)

I checked out the zone files from 4 new gTLDs that completed sunrise and went into general availability (Early Access Program (EAP)) on Wednesday and here are the results. Zone files only include domain names that have nameservers assigned. Registered domains with no nameservers don’t enter the zone files so these aren’t taken into account.

Number of sunrise domain name registrations:
.diamonds 81
.enterprises 110
.voyage 114
.tips 120

All 4 new gTLDs had very low sunrise registrations. .Clothing had 561 registrations and .technology had 374 sunrise registrations. Trademark holders can still buy domains in sunrise prices for a few days more.

Here are some notes on sunrise registrations:

Sedo GmbH bought the domain

German pharmaceutical company Merck KGaA continues buying junk like merck.diamonds. Why? Probably to stop the other Merck Pharmaceutical from registering these domains. Waste of money if you ask me.

  1. Are these defensive registrations or will they be used for a marketing campaign in the future?

  2. Nobody knows that answer, only the marketing departments of the companies involved.

When you own Tiffany.com, Tiffanys.com and sell little trinkets for $400 onto tens of thousands, you really don’t care about spending a few grand on domains.
