Brannan’s domain newsletter makes major changes

Brannan’s domain newsletter, operated by David Clements, announced some makes major changes for 2017.

The big change is that David has decided to drop the “daily” from the Brannans newsletter.

This means he’ll be passing back the TobyClements.com database to Toby. A couple of years ago, David Clements added Toby’s database to Brannan’s to keep his newsletter alive and help his company level out. Their efforts have been successful. Toby has a plan in place to relaunch the newsletter and get back to the business of brokering domains with all closings through Escrow.com. (If you have any questions for Toby, you can email him directly at Toby@TobyClements.com.)

Brannans will still do newsletters, but they will be much less frequent. David will also be using the Brannans platform to do private auctions with a limited numbers of bidders on specific domains.

Here is the complete announcement:

Hi Everyone,

Things have never been better for me in the business world. That said, between Batteries.com and Brannans.com, I’ve been working 80+ hours a week for the past few years. That’s the reason for this email.

At Batteries.com, if our growth rate continues, we may have over 40 employees by mid-2017. It definitely helped purchasing a category defining domain name. It also helps that Batteries has operated as a business online for over 17 years. After getting the domain name and US trademark, I negotiated for everything else, including the entire customer list going back to 1999. So far I’ve bootstrapped everything and don’t have any investors at the table. That may change in the near future, we’ll see….

Brokerage of premium domain names at Brannans has never been better. Looking back over 10 years, I feel that I’ve contributed positively to the domain industry, and I’ve never been more interested in premium domain name investment, sales, and brokerage. The past 2 years were record years and I’m looking forward to seeing what 2017 will bring. Of course, I’m also still always interested in investment opportunities in the space and will keep buying domain names as well.

Recently, I decided to re-evaluate everything I’m doing with my time. It’s been a great exercise and it’s led me to a few conclusions. On the domain side (relevant to most of you on this thread) I’ve decided to focus my efforts on higher value, ultra-premium domain name brokerage with major, long term end-user outreach. I’ll continue to work with other brokers and other platforms for cobrokerage. Of course, I’ll also continue to make domain name investments for my own portfolio.

The big change – I’ve decided to drop the “daily” from the Brannans newsletter. This means I’ll be passing back the TobyClements.com database to Toby. A couple of years ago, I added Toby’s database to my own to keep his newsletter alive and help his company level out. Our efforts have been successful. Toby has a plan in place to relaunch the newsletter and get back to the business of brokering domains with all closings through Escrow.com. (If you have any questions for Toby, you can email him directly at Toby@TobyClements.com.)

Brannans will still do newsletters, but they will be much less frequent. I’ll also be using the Brannans platform to do private auctions with a limited numbers of bidders on specific domains.

I’m really looking forward to seeing a lot of old friends and making new ones at NamesCon next month. If you’d like to sit down to catch up or talk shop, let me know.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out to me directly.

  1. What happend to Toby.com, did Oliver repo it, and sell it to Drew, so you could pay off your indebtness?

So Toby what did you do with everyone’s money, gamble it away?

  2. I started receiving spam from Batteries.com a few weeks ago which I would just delete until one day I got pissed because it seemed like the spam was now almost daily so I went to the bottom to unsubscribe and saw that the business as related to this guy. Yes, I signed up for his domain newsletter a while ago, No, I did not ask to get anything from Batteries.com. What kind of business practice is that to take an email list where people opted in and start sending them crap from a completely unrelated business. Not sure if this practice is legal under the CAN-SPAM act but it should be if it isn’t, and if it is he better change or get ready to have a complaint filed against him.

    • Buy your batteries from ebay way cheaper.

    • I got batteries.com spam, didn’t put the connection together until I saw this, obviously these people like to run the line when it comes to law, and legality, don’t expect Toby Clements to be a boyscout now, forgot the taste of an easy dollar, ain’t easy hustlin.

Maybe buy some .club’s, I am sure 50 cent will sell you some.

  3. Konstantinos – thanks for the coverage. will you be coming to NamesCon again? If so, see you soon….

Chris – what you’re saying is not true about Batteries.com emails. I use Aweber for both Brannans and Batteries.com – and during the last 2 years I mixed up the accounts (by being logged into one but building and sending an email for the other) 3 -4 times max – once I even caught it and did a retraction 30 minutes later. It was one of the reasons that I decided to cut out the daily from the domain newsletter. I’m about to delete over 26,000 Batteries subscribers that haven’t opened up or subscribed in the last 6 months – it’s something I do monthly – believe me, I don’t want to send anyone emails that they don’t want – unopens cause a lot of deliverability problems as I’m sure you know since you run AntiCareer.com.

Rich – We’ve got over 8000 products – and we regularly beat eBay, Amazon, Jet, etc. I have a high volume retail background (Home Depot) so I take pride in competing with the big boys. Since Batteries.com has been buying from some vendors for over 17 years I get and pass along some very competitive pricing. The real problem with getting batteries from marketplace sellers is that they regularly sell black market and gray market goods. All things being equal, I sell first quality products, fresh date coded, authentic batteries. Every month, I buy black market counterfeit batteries from marketplace sellers just to show everyone in the office what garbage is sold online. We even got used batteries sent to us from a marketplace seller.

  4. Here is the newsletter followup I got, usually when you send the wrong email on black friday ah hem… then you follow up with a sales pitch within an apology, it is very sinister.

Why are the Clement boys always pretending their the victims? Whats up with that?

I recommend everyone unsubscribe as we have seen what Toby has done with client funds, it is unlawful, Adam Dickerish kind of actions, enough of this crap.

    Hi Everyone,

I apologize for the email that you just received from Batteries.com. You have not been signed up to Batteries emails. I was pushing hard to get our Black Friday email out and was still logged into my Brannans account when I pasted in HTML and Subject and hit send. My phone was ringing 30 seconds later.

If you’re in the US or Canada, feel free to take a look at our new Batteries.com website (launched Wednesday) and check out our Black Friday promotions. They’re really good this year! We’re competing head on with Amazon, Walmart, Jet, Newegg, etc. and we offer free shipping on every order.

I’m going to grab some more coffee. Again, Sorry for the mix up.

    Have a great day!

    Best regards,

    David Clements

  5. Toby Clements sold me WeightLossHerbs.com about 6 weeks ago via his newsletter and asked me to skip Escrow as it was a small transaction. I sent the payment via Paypal but I never received the domain name. After numerous email exchanges and excuses, now, all his email addresses bounce back: toby@dtrader.com, questions@dtrader.com, submissions@tobyclements.com. Google brings some similar stories in the past. I wish I knew. I trusted him as I bought few domain names from him in the past. Besides my stupidity, how come somebody can ruin his reputation for just $325.00?
