XYZ Registry Buys .Theatre

xyz-logo-purpleFollowing .Security and .Protection the XYZ registry, announced that the .Theatre New gTLD will be joining the XYZ family. This is the 3rd announcement about a new extension in 3 days for XYZ.

The XYZ registry already operates .College, .Rent and .xyz. Recently XYZ bought .Car From Google and joined Uniregistry to run .Cars, .Car, & .Auto.

XYZ bought the .Theatre New gTLD from the company that was the only applicant for it. .Theater belongs to Donuts.

Here is part of the announcement today:

“The theatre and performing arts have been a beloved tradition for over 10,000 years – who doesn’t like to be entertained?! And think about all the show venues and movie theatres in your own town or big cities. Theatres are everywhere.

Why the British spelling of “theatre,” you ask?

Aside from being the traditional way of spelling out the word, a large portion of performance venues and movies theatres in the United States also spell it the British way with an -re. Hollywood Pantages Theatre, Lyceum Theatre, AMC Theatre, and even US-based schools with theatre departments will spell it out with an -re.

We challenge you to a “theatre” vs. “theater” word hunt through the US. Which is more prevalent? Our bet is on the Brits.

As the artsiest and most creative member of our domain family, .Theatre will give everyone who has a passion for theatre a special namespace of their own. Since it is the artsiest, we’re putting some extra elbow-grease into creating a fitting logo, suited for the creative type!”

Also XYZ is asking people to choose one of the 2 logos they are thinking of giving to .Theatre. I have to go with logo B. It is hard enough to remember that this is the English spelling, you don’t need that font in logo A where you can’t tell “r” from “e”.

  1. Much as I love the Brits, I believe XYZ Registry’s bet regarding “which is more prevalent” in the USA – “theater” or “theatre” – has a clear answer:

Among Americans, “theatre” seems quaint or hoity toity; and “theater” is the standard.
