.Net domain name wholesale price goes up again on February 1st, 2015. That means you have a few days to renew your .net domain names for 1 to 10 years so you can save a few $.
Verisign announced an increase in the annual fee for a .net domain name registration from $6.18 to $6.79, per its agreement with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
The .Net wholesale price increased again last year on February 1st, 2014. I seems that this increase has become an annual tradition now.
.Net wholesale price increased on January 15th 2012. Price went up 10%: from $4.65 to $5.11. The .net price also increased to $5.62 on July 1, 2013.
The .net price has gone up 46% since 2012. Reports show that .net registrations are going down. Some attribute the drop on New gTLDs but I think it is not all because of that. Price is certainly a factor.
Since the registry .com price stays at $7.85 until November 30th, 2018 (when Verisign .com contract expires) Verisign will probably increase the .net domain name price annualy.
Verisign is allowed by it’s contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to increase the registry price for .net 10% every year. At this rate .net price will be $8.20 in 2017. That will be higher that the current .com price that will stay at $7.85 until 2018.
All fees don’t include the ICANN fee and are wholesale prices from Verisign to the registrars.
.net sales are down and they raise prices by 10% each year, where our final price usually raises even more, so the drop will continue. It’s against all common long-term business sense, but keep going…
Agree with Nuno, that’s a masochistic business move, a nonsense, long-term speaking … that will generate a further slowdown in .net registrations …
I think Verisign is counting on the fact that the price raise will more than offset the registration slowdown … let’s see …
It’s as you said, but it’s narrow minded thinking of their part. It will keep pushing people away and one day they may regret it.

Verisign is thinking “hey people pay alot for meaningful new gtlds so we can do that too !”.
