Using NameSilo 2-Factor Authentication With Authy App

namesiloI have been using the NameSilo registrar for about 4 months now and so far my experience is pretty positive.

I didn’t know NameSilo until someone told me about it in this post I wrote looking for a new registrar.

.Com domain transfers are priced at $8.39 and it offers 2-factor authentication (2FA) among other security features. I have been using 2-factor authentication with Namesilo from the day I created my account together with Google Authencticator.

After this whole Moniker hacking problems and stolen domains I think that a 2-factor authentication is prerequisite when searching for a new registrar.

I got an email from Namesilo:

“We show that you have taken advantage of 2-factor authentication (2FA) to help protect your NameSilo account. We think this is an excellent choice!

We wanted to let you know that we are now recommending that all customers using 2FA consider changing from Google Authencticator to another free application called Authy.

The biggest reason for this suggestion is that Authy securely backs up your 2FA information. Sometimes customers lose their 2FA information (i.e. lost their phone, upgraded to iOS 8, etc.). When this happens, all 2FA logins stop working resulting in a major inconvenience. With Authy, you can easily install it on a new device and it securely imports all of your 2FA information for you.

There are other advantages as well that we list on our 2FA support page.

You are not required to change to Authy. Google Authenticator will still work as it always has, but please consider our suggestion if it meets your needs.”

So Authy offers backups that is a nice extra feature that Google Authencticator doesn’t offer. So I thought about giving Authy a try.

I installed the app on my android phone, entered my phone number and email address and scanned the QR code from my Namesilo account.

It didn’t work the first time for some strange reason. I deleted the code from Authy and rescanned the QR code and it worked. I suggest you try Authy if you are using 2-factor authentication to protect your registrar account and domain names.

  1. Can you use Authy with Godaddy outside the US to achieve 2-Factor Authentication?

  2. Kosta, I’m glad to see you are having a good experience with Namesilo! 🙂
We also are evaluating to use Authy as 2 way authentication, I think that depending too much from Google, especially for security purposes, is not a good idea … a word to the wise …;)
A few days ago I was talking to Acro about this online authentication stuff and … I ended purchasing OnlineAuthentication.com … lol 😀

  3. Namesilo is the best! Very happy there
