New Shorter .NZ Domains Names Coming In September In New Zealand

The .nz registry is following the footsteps of Nominet, the .uk registry, offering shorter .nz (New Zealand) ccTLD domain names.

From 1pm, 30 September 2014, ‘second level’ domains like the .co in ‘.co.nz’ and the .org in ‘.org.nz’ will become optional. You’ll be able to get .nz names with them, without them, or both.

You may have ‘Preferential Registration Eligibility’ if you are an Existing Registrant. This means you could register or reserve the shorter version of your .nz domain name before it becomes available to anyone else.

If you have a .nz domain name, you’re an existing registrant. It’s important to know that you may be eligible to register or reserve the shorter version of your .nz domain name before it becomes available to anyone else.

To find out if you’re eligible, check the status of your domain name. Or, talk to your Registrar – the company or organisation you registered your name through.

If you are eligible and don’t want to register or reserve the shorter version of your domain name, that’s fine. You’ll still be able to use your domain name as you always have.

Remember, to find out if you’re eligible check your New Zealand domain name status here.

What does your status mean?

  • Will be Available

you can try and register the shorter version of the name on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis from 1pm, 30 September 2014.

  • Will be Conflicted

your name has been registered in at least two second levels. To get the shorter version you’ll need to go through the ‘conflict’ process from 1pm, 30 September 2014.

  • Will be PRR

you’ve got Preferential Registration or Reservation eligibility and can register or reserve the shorter version of your name before anyone else.

  • Will be Prohibited

no-one is able to register the shorter version of the name.

  1. Followed in the footsteps of .UK to the shorter version sure
but, If your .nz domain name is ‘conflicted’. That it’s been registered in at least two second levels it’s a grim business. Compare the two approaches:

Here is why nominet said it gave preference to .co.uk

‘The approach to give priority to .co.uk domain holders was one of the most common suggestions in the consultation feedback we received. We agree that this is the best option as it is fair to as many people as possible, will minimise consumer confusion, and best reflects the perceptions and expectations within the domain name market.’

Here’s what the .nz Domain Name Commissioner – Debbie Monahan has decreed

‘For reasons of fairness, where there is more than one Registrant competing for a .nz domain name to be registered directly at the second level the Domain Name Commission does not believe preference could be given to the oldest registration.’

‘Similarly, the Domain Name Commission does not believe one second level should have preference over any other. For example, the Registrant of anyname.co.nz should not be treated differently to the Registrant of anyname.school.nz.’

Can you believe that. There is just no respect for .nz registrants. Even if we have contributed to the registry and her salary from the start we can all just go and slug it out because it’s …. fair. Her judgement is shocking and it is time for her to go.
