Internet Groups Discussed New Priorities In Latin America and Caribbean

ICANN’s Latin American and Caribbean Working Group met at the Internet Hub for Latin America and the Caribbean in Montevideo, Uruguay, 6-7 February 2013.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Internet Address Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean (Lacnic) discussed how to expand the availability and quality of Internet services in the area.
“Lacnic is honored to host ICANN at its facilities and to be able to contribute to the work of a sister organization,” said Raul Echeberria, Lacnic’s Executive Director. “We are committed to supporting initiatives that will result in more and better Internet services for our region.”
During the two-day gathering, Internet users joined representatives from government, business and the technical community in a planning workshop aimed at identifying ways to to advance the development of an ICANN strategy for the region. Among other things, this strategy is intended to improve the Internet resource infrastructure such as domain names and IP addresses.
“For ICANN, it is extremely important that the Internet community itself defines its strategic objectives, which allows us to support regional initiatives that meet the region’s needs,” said Rodrigo de la Parra, ICANN Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean.
